A Division One college coach texted one of our guests last week about a player. One word: "Athletic?"

That came up in our free Q&A with Tom Bowen (MLS NEXT Director, The Island FC) and Adam Marcu (Director of Coaching, FA Euro New York). Three things they kept coming back to:

1. College coaches ask "is he athletic?" almost straight away, often before anything else about a player's game.

2. Most of the game happens without the ball. A player who can't cover ground, press or defend 1v1 gets found out, however good their technique.

3. Technique has to hold up under pressure. Skills practised alone with no pressure tend to fall apart when a player is tired or pressed.
